TEDxTruro 2018: A day full of wonder

Once again, St Austell Printing Company were proud to sponsor TEDxTruro event which took place at Truro College last week.
Matt and Jon from St Austell Printing Company were pleased to attend the day, which saw 15 speakers and performers spark curiosity by presenting talks on this year’s subject: Wonder.
TedX talks are inspired by the TED conference, where some of the world’s best thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED created TEDx, a program of local, self-organised events to bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
TEDxTruro’s aim was to encourage everyone to marvel at the wonders of the world and take a moment to appreciate the intrinsic beauty it has to offer. Through posing questions, sharing stories, starting conversations and revealing insights into their work the speakers opened doors to new understandings – and encouraged the audience to “open their minds and ask themselves the question ‘I wonder?’.”
As the name suggests, the day took us on a wondrous journey of experiences, research and inspiring stories. From Rogue Theatre’s Ollie Oakenshield explaining the importance of wonder in imagination and storytelling, to Sacha Dench sharing her adventure following the flightpath of wild swans over 7000km with a paramotor strapped to her back; there was so much to educate and inspire.
Photographer Hugh Hastings is a professional photographer and writer who lives in Cornwall, and was the official photographer for Chelsea Football Club for ten years. Since 2008 he has managed the club’s official photographic archives and in his talk he shared the life-affirming experience of looking at photos of the past – and reflected on the advent of digital photography and it’s use can lead to an abundance of imagery – sometimes too much to properly manage, catalogue and store for future generations.
Christine Jensen, well-known to many as a regular on Channel 4’s Extreme Cake Makers talked about how cakes and make our memories of joy, love and surprise stick – showing that wonder enriches life and creates deep memories. As she put it herself, “Wonder is when ‘what’ meets ‘wow!'”.
Matt Bunt from SAPC said: “The 2017 event had a lot to live up to and TEDxTruro 2018 certainly did that. There was such a wide variety of topics covered in a relatively short time. It really felt like we were on a journey of enlightenment, education, inspiration and of course, wonder.
“In fact, we felt quite privileged to have such a high-calibre of speakers sharing their stories in an intimate environment.
“Many congratulations to the speakers and the team of volunteers who helped put on such a great event.”
As part of our support we once again provided the printing of the programmes and also special notebooks for people to use at the event.
We were very proud to support TEDxTruro 2018 and look forward to next year’s event.
A fantastic morning so far at #TEDxTruro. In particular really enjoyed the talk by @hughhastings. Look after your photos, store them sensibly because you will enjoy them in the future. He also advocated putting them into print ;-) pic.twitter.com/mAifmEEbq7
